Symposium Proceedings
Peptides - From Discovery to Therapeutics
The 7th in the series of Australian Peptide Conferences was a particularly exciting event as it was held jointly from 21-25 October, 2007, with not only the 4th International Peptide Symposium but also the 2nd Asia-Pacific Peptide Symposium. It was the first time that the International Symposium was held in the southern hemisphere and it was held in the modern city of Cairns, at the northern end of tropical Queensland, a wonderful location for exploring some of Australia's vast array of flora and fauna and natural treasures such as the Great Barrier Reef. More than 400 delegates from all corners of the globe congregated at the superb Cairns Convention Centre to learn of many exciting and rapid advances in peptide research that were provided by the more than 70 oral and 200 poster presentations. These ranged from new synthetic procedures, biology, pharmacology and physiology to the discovery of peptides with novel biological properties, methods for their functional and structural analysis, innovative approaches to elucidate peptide-ligand interactions and new approaches to drug delivery, as well as the emergence of peptide mimetics and peptide-based therapeutics. With the sequencing of the genomes of an increasing number of mammalian species now complete, it is abundantly clear that we are at a particularly rewarding and exciting time as the impacts of genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics start to drive modern drug discovery.
The collection of fully peer-reviewed articles in this special internet version of the proceedings of the 4th International Peptide Symposium / 7th Australian Peptide Symposium / 2nd Asia-Pacific Peptide Symposium was compiled following our open invitation to all attendees to submit manuscripts. We are delighted to acknowledge an exceptional response, and we believe that the result clearly illustrates both the excellence and diversity of the subject matter that was presented at this exciting joint symposium. We are grateful to not only all authors for their cooperation in ensuring that these proceedings became a reality but also to the many referees, both local and international, who undertook their duties willingly and efficiently. Special thanks must go to Jackie Wilce, the Proceedings editor, whose tireless efforts made this compilation a reality, the outcome of which amply demonstrates the excellence of the 4th International Peptide Symposium / 7th Australian Peptide Symposium / 2nd Asia-Pacific Peptide Symposium. We know that you will find these Proceedings a valuable adjunct to your own research and hope that it will foster new and productive collaborations.
Sincerely,
Ian Smith & John Wade
